Work in Progress: A Glimpse into the Secret Heart of the Forest
Hey everyone! I'm thrilled to share a sneak peek at a painting I've been pouring my heart into. This piece is still a work in progress, but I'm excited about how it's coming along and the story it's starting to tell.
My background as a park ranger in the majestic Olympic National Park has always deeply influenced my art. There, amidst the ancient forests, I was constantly fascinated by the sight of colossal nurse logs, nurturing new life as young trees sprouted from their decaying forms. To my fantasy artist's eye, these natural wonders always sparked imaginings of hidden portals and creatures just beyond human sight.
This painting, "The Eighth Threshold ", is born from one of those imaginings. It depicts a mighty nurse log formed by eight entwined trees, creating a powerful, organic structure. But on the side, just out of plain view, lies a secret portal – a shimmering gateway to another realm.
The number eight is incredibly significant here, echoing its powerful symbolism in witchcraft, representing the profound connection between the material and spiritual worlds. As you can see, ravens and owls soar across the portal's threshold, acting as omens and oracles for any brave soul contemplating entry. And guarding this mystical entrance is a magnificent winged feline creature, a fusion of dragon and lynx, watchful and vigilant. She's there to protect the mysterious world beyond from any darkness or ill intent that might try to pass through.
While painting, I've found myself completely immersed in the atmosphere of Debra Harkness's captivating book, Black Bird Oracle. I have a feeling it's subconsciously woven its way into the fabric of this piece, adding to its mystique.
This painting feels like more than just a single piece of art; it feels like the beginning of something new.
What do you all think so far? I'd love to hear your thoughts!
