A Samhain Reflection: The Magic of "Dark Fantasy"

A Samhain Reflection: The Magic of "Dark Fantasy"

Happy Halloween! Or, for those who feel the deeper currents of the day, a blessed Samhain.

On a day like today, when the veil between worlds feels beautifully thin, I wanted to share a piece that lives in that magical, shadowy space: "Dark Fantasy."

This painting is one of my most popular, and I think it’s because it tells a story that many of us feel deep in our bones at this time of year. It’s a story of transformation.

I’ve always envisioned this piece as a mythic "changing of the guard." A forest deity, crowned with horns, drives her chariot of unicorns through the world. But these aren't just any unicorns; they carry the visage of what’s to come. As they pass, their ethereal, chilling magic transforms the world from the warmth of summer to the introspective quiet of winter. You can see the creatures in their path changing form, embracing the shift.

This is the beautiful, inevitable cycle of life, death, and rebirth.

As an artist, I strongly identify as a "Mythic Dreamer." I'm drawn to the epic stories, the hidden lore, and the magic that governs the world just beneath the surface. For me, there is profound beauty in the shadows and the "darker" half of the year. This painting isn't just about an ending; it's about the powerful, necessary transition that makes way for a new beginning.

So on this Halloween, as the air chills and the night draws in, I'm celebrating the magic of that change.

Thank you for letting me share this story with you. I hope it adds a little extra magic to your night.

I’d love to know (leave a comment below!):

  • What stories or myths does this piece make you think of?

  • Do you also feel a special kind of magic at this time of year?
